ARTIST STATEMENT

PENS, PENCILS, AND TANGLES-OH MY!

Osiyo (hello)!
My art work is inspired by the beautiful absurdity of nature, the meditative flow of Zentangling, and the relationships between people and nature. Layering multiple mediums in my pieces, from pointillism to still life to Zentangling, I express the complexity of my subjects. Inspired by my ancestors, I believe in the power of relationships, especially between people and nature, and express the physicality, delicacy, and mathematical principles that govern their design.
I vary in styles at times, but I keep my mediums simple: pen and pencil. I dabble in cartoons, illustration, and graphic design but primarily focus on Zentangling, a style that combines art and meditation through repetitive designs that involve mathematical principles. My passion for meditation infiltrates my work so much that art and meditation become inseparable, seen in works such as “Ego and Id” and “June Bloom.”
